Mindful Eating: Improving Healthy Eating Habits

JAKARTA, June 26, 2025 – Health is a valuable asset that supports productivity and quality of life. As part of its commitment to employee well-being, Waruna Group, one of Indonesia’s largest shipyard and shipping companies, collaborated with Bosowa Insurance and Mitra Keluarga Kelapa Gading Hospital to organize a health seminar entitled “Mindful Eating: Improve Eating Habits.”

Brian Bermana, HSE Manager of Waruna Group, explained that the Company aims to provide health education and awareness for all employees, including both shore-based personnel and onboard crew members across the Waruna fleet. The seminar focused on the importance of balancing nutritional intake with an active lifestyle and regular physical activity, which can provide long-term benefits for healthier and longer lives.

Based on data collected and analyzed by the QHSEV Division of Waruna Group’s HSE Department over the past three years, the Company identified an increasing number of employees and job applicants with blood sugar levels, triglycerides, cholesterol levels, dyslipidemia indicators, and blood pressure readings exceeding recommended thresholds.

According to Waruna Group’s HSE Department, one of the primary contributing factors to these conditions is an unbalanced diet. Maintaining a balanced eating pattern is one of the most important keys to managing normal blood sugar, triglyceride, cholesterol, lipid profile, and blood pressure levels. Therefore, employees are encouraged to understand the importance of balanced nutrition and make informed food choices to improve their overall health and productivity.

As part of its ongoing commitment to employee wellness, Waruna Group encourages all employees to adopt the Six Pillars of Health in their daily lives:

  • Balanced nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Stress management
  • Social connection
  • Quality sleep
  • Avoidance of harmful substances

Interventions focused on the three key areas of nutrition, physical activity, and healthy behaviors have been proven effective in promoting healthier lifestyles.

During the seminar, Dr. Angela Dalimarta, Clinical Nutrition Specialist from Mitra Keluarga Kelapa Gading Hospital, highlighted recommendations from Harvard Medical School regarding the Healthy Eating Plate concept and the implementation of the “3J” Principle (Amount, Type, and Schedule) as the foundation of balanced nutrition.

She also emphasized the importance of consuming 25–38 grams of dietary fiber per day and choosing whole foods over ultra-processed foods to help prevent obesity and other degenerative diseases. According to Dr. Angela, carbohydrates remain an essential source of energy, particularly for brain function and red blood cell production, while also helping prevent muscle protein breakdown.

Dr. Angela further explained that a higher body weight does not necessarily indicate obesity, as body composition—including body fat percentage and visceral fat levels—is a more important indicator of health. To achieve a healthier body composition, she encouraged employees to focus on fat loss through an active lifestyle that includes regular exercise, body measurements, and routine medical check-ups.

She also recommended that employees engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week, complemented by 7–8 hours of sleep per day to support optimal recovery and overall well-being.

Waruna Group remains committed to creating a workplace environment that supports the holistic health of all employees. Therefore, the Company encourages everyone to:

  • Apply the 3J Principle (Amount, Type, and Schedule) in daily eating habits.
  • Stay physically active through personal exercise routines and the sports facilities provided by the Company.
  • Manage stress effectively.
  • Undergo regular health check-ups.

By consistently implementing the Six Pillars of Health, Waruna Group aims to foster a healthier, more productive, and sustainable workplace culture—starting with the well-being of each individual employee.
