WARUNA OFFICERS SEMINAR 2025: Strengthening Regulatory Compliance for Safer Shipping Operations

Waruna Group successfully held its annual WARUNA OFFICERS SEMINAR 2025 under the theme “Regulatory Compliance in Enhancing Maritime Safety.” The seminar served as a strategic platform to strengthen understanding and implementation of maritime safety regulations through discussions with experts from across the maritime industry.

The event was attended by ship officers, operational management teams, and maritime professionals, and featured distinguished speakers from government institutions and industry stakeholders.

The seminar commenced with a presentation by Capt. Dicky Purnama from the Manning and Seafarer Certification Standardization Division of Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation. He highlighted the importance of compliance with crewing regulations and seafarer certification requirements as a fundamental element in maintaining professionalism and ensuring safe vessel operations. He emphasized that the quality of seafarers plays a critical role in the success of maritime operations and must be supported by a credible and standardized certification system.

The second session was delivered by Capt. Atik Pandin, Marine Inspector at the Directorate of Shipping and Seafarers Affairs, Ministry of Transportation. In his presentation, titled “Seaworthiness of Indonesian-Flagged Vessels,” he explained various indicators of vessel seaworthiness, including structural integrity, safety equipment, and technical documentation. He also stressed the crucial role of shipmasters and vessel management in ensuring compliance with seaworthiness requirements.

In the session “The Role of BKI in Ship Certification and Surveys,” Wasito Abdul Mukit, Vice President of Statutory Affairs and External Relations at Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI), explained the organization’s role as Indonesia’s national classification society in ensuring vessels comply with international technical and safety standards. He also discussed periodic survey processes and the importance of collaboration between ship operators and classification societies.

The final external speaker, Capt. Ade Gunawan, Vice President HSSE of Pertamina International Shipping, presented a session entitled “Charterer Expectations on Safety and Compliance.” He shared the perspective of charterers regarding the importance of meeting safety standards and regulatory requirements. He noted that charterers today are increasingly selective and prefer to work only with operators that demonstrate a strong safety culture and a proven commitment to compliance.

In addition to the external speakers, the seminar featured several internal presentations from Waruna Group covering key operational and safety topics, including:

Tanker Performance
A discussion on technical and operational factors influencing the efficiency and safety of tanker operations.

Lessons Learned from 2024 Cases
Participants reviewed incidents that occurred throughout 2024 to identify key lessons and support continuous improvement of operational procedures.

Understanding Safety Observation & Safety Culture
A session emphasizing the importance of active crew participation in safety observation and reporting systems to help prevent incidents before they occur.

The seminar concluded with a highly interactive discussion session that encouraged the exchange of ideas and reinforced a shared commitment to enhancing maritime safety. WARUNA OFFICERS SEMINAR 2025 served not only as a learning and knowledge-sharing forum but also as a testament to the importance of collaboration among seafarers, shipping companies, regulators, and industry stakeholders in achieving safe, compliant, and professional maritime operations.
