Did you know that among the tankers sailing across the world's oceans to transport industrial commodities, some are enormous vessels stretching hundreds of meters in length and capable of carrying hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cargo?
When people talk about the world's largest tankers, the focus often falls on international fleets. However, Indonesia also operates large tankers that help support the country's energy distribution by sea. Let's see some of these impressive vessels and what makes each one unique below!
The World's Largest Tankers
Some tankers are remarkable not only for their enormous size but also for their exceptional cargo capacity. Here are several of the world's largest tankers you should know:
Knock Nevis
The Knock Nevis, also known as the Seawise Giant, was the longest ship ever built and one of the largest vessels in maritime history. Measuring approximately 458 meters in length, it had a deadweight capacity of around 565,000 tonnes. Its immense size was so remarkable that comparisons were even made between the vessel and the Eiffel Tower in terms of scale.
Originally built in 1976 and later rebuilt in 1979, the Knock Nevis spent the final years of its service as a floating oil storage facility. The vessel was eventually taken to Alang, Gujarat, India, for scrapping in 2009, bringing its remarkable maritime career to an end.
Euronav Oseania
Which tanker is among the largest still in service? The Euronav Oceania is one of the notable examples. Built by a South Korean shipbuilder and launched in 2003, the vessel measures approximately 380 meters in length and 68 meters in width, with a deadweight capacity of around 441,585 tonnes.
Its enormous width exceeds the dimensions permitted by the locks of the Panama Canal's expanded route, preventing it from transiting the canal. Passage through the Suez Canal is also restricted by its dimensions, although transit may be possible under specific conditions, such as when the vessel is sailing in ballast, that is, carrying ballast water for stability rather than a full cargo of oil.
Front Eminence
The Front Eminence is a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) equipped with a double-hull design. The vessel measured 333 meters in length and 60 meters in width, with a deadweight capacity of 321,300 tonnes.
The vessel's name changed several times over the years. In January 2023, it was renamed Eminence, before becoming AGOGO FPSO in July 2024. It was also converted into a Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) unit, a floating offshore facility used to process, store, and transfer oil produced from offshore fields.
Pascagoula Voyager
Like the Front Eminence, the Pascagoula Voyager is a VLCC designed to transport large volumes of crude oil. Built for Chevron Shipping Company, the vessel measures 336 meters in overall length and 60 meters in width, with a deadweight capacity of 318,608 tonnes.
Houston Voyager
The Houston Voyager belongs to the same vessel series as the Pascagoula Voyager, sharing the same overall length, width, and deadweight capacity.
Chevron officially named the crude oil tanker Houston Voyager in South Korea on January 4, 2019. The vessel transports crude oil from the United States, including Texas shale oil, and carries imported crude from the Middle East to the US market.
DHT COLT
The DHT COLT is another large oil tanker, built in South Korea in 2018. It measures 336 meters in length and 60.04 meters in width, with a deadweight capacity of 318,000 tonnes.
Its double-hull construction helps reduce the risk of oil spills, providing an additional layer of environmental protection. The vessel is also gearless, meaning it does not have onboard cargo-handling equipment such as cranes. As a result, loading and unloading operations rely on proper coordination between the vessel and the terminal.
Seri Cemara
While the previous vessels are primarily crude oil tankers, the Seri Cemara represents a different category. This Malaysian-flagged vessel is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier built in 2018. The vessel measures 290 meters in length and 49 meters in width, with a deadweight capacity of 84,291 tonnes.
Pertamina Gas Amaryllis
PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), the integrated marine logistics subholding of PT Pertamina (Persero), also operates a gas tanker named Pertamina Gas Amaryllis, commonly known as PG Amaryllis.
With a deadweight capacity of 57,555 tonnes and a length of 230 meters, the vessel is a notable example of Indonesia's large gas carriers. PG Amaryllis is Indonesia's first Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) equipped with a dual-fuel system, allowing it to operate using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO).
The Largest Tankers by Waruna Group
With more than 35 years of experience in Indonesia's maritime industry, Waruna Group operates a fleet of tankers with impressive carrying capacities. Here are two notable vessels in its fleet.
MT Star Valiant
The MT Star Valiant is an oil tanker operated by Waruna Group. Built in 2003, the vessel has a deadweight capacity of 107,200 DWT, measures 246.8 meters in length, and is 42 meters wide.
Beyond its size, the MT Star Valiant has also been recognized for its cargo loss management performance. At the 2025 Loss Control Summit, the vessel secured first place in the Best Performance Loss Management – Charter Crude Tanker category, an award presented by PERTAMINA.
MT Alpha Point
Another large tanker operated by Waruna Group is the MT Alpha Point. The vessel measures 248 meters in length and 43 meters in width, with a deadweight capacity of 106,029 DWT.
In its operations, the MT Alpha Point follows the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and implements the Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) program.
Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the ISM Code provides a framework for ship safety management and pollution prevention. Meanwhile, TMSA helps tanker operators assess and continuously improve their vessel management practices.
Both vessels are available for charter through Waruna Group's integrated Shipping Services.
In addition to these two tankers, Waruna also offers a wide range of vessels with varying carrying capacities to meet different business needs. The options include the MT TOTAL ENERGY (37,255 DWT), MT HIPPO (46,092 DWT), MT DEFIANCE (105,538 DWT), and more.
